Sadly our sweet Kate had to leave us last night. She departed in a haze of song and love surrounded by family and good friends. She is irreplaceable and we are broken-hearted. Til we meet again dear sister. ♡

The pic of Kate was taken by David Gahr in 1970 when Kate was in NYC with Roma Baran.

    Dear Anna,

I and thousands and thousands of the McGarrigle Sisters’ devoted fans, are so very sad. Your music is so beautiful – I have been watching and listening to several of your songs this morning in honour of Kate. And laughed my way through your baking the ski cookies with Martha Stewart.

I am also one of three girls and have grieved deeply over the loss of our youngest sister 4 years ago. You are in my thoughts during this very difficult time. My deepest sympathies to you, Jane and all your families.

How terribly sad; deepest condolences to all the McGarrigle tribe. I am so glad to have seen Kate and Anna – and extended musical family – play together on several occasions: absolute highlights of my concert-going. As Anna says, irreplaceable. RIP Kate.

I had the priviledge of seeing Kate and her entire family perform at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in December. She was such a talented and charming lady. The loss to her family will be beyond comprehension.

Sleep peacefully, Kate. Your devoted fans will not forget you.

I am so sorry to hear of Kate’s passing and of this profound loss for the McGarrigle family. I had the pleasure of seeing her perform with Anna more than a dozen times. Her presence on this earth and voice in song helped define the Canadian cultural landscape.

Dearest people, I’m so sorry. I lost my beloved wife to cancer just six months ago and it still hurts. I’ve known your work and loved your songs from the very earliest days, Mendocino still makes me cry, as does heart like a wheel. Dancer with bruised knees and the french album still get played frequently. I will never forget the Cambridge festival appearances. Kate will never die while those of us who loved the music still remember the vibrant human being who helped create it. May she rest in peace.
    Lov and respect Jo

What incredibly devastating news for the whole family. I am so glad and lucky that I was present to witness the Royal Albert Hall show in December. To think I almost never went, due to another commitment, but came to my senses. I will never forget that night. Heaven reverberates to a sweet voice today.

    With love

What a terrible loss of a real light in the world. Hold on to the love she no doubt left you with all. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her and by people she never met. (Me included!)I got to know about her from being a fan of Rufus and Martha. The stories and comments at their shows seemed to bring us into the family circle. Please take some comfort knowing our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Kate was a wonderful, gracious, talented lady with great strength of character.
These qualities have been so generously passed on to her children,of whom she was so proud.
We admired her courage tremendously, especially at The Royal Albert Hall in London 2009,a concert indeed to remember.
And so, we can only pass on to you all, our combined sympathy and sadness upon hearing the news today. Our hearts go out to your hearts.
Sweet kate indeed,we will all miss her.

It always seemed to me that Kate spent half her life making music of extraordinary beauty and deep emotion, and the other half tuning…

She was unique and wonderful and will be much missed.

    No more candlelight
    No more romance
    No more small talk

    We will love you always.
