    Anna,
Your birthday falls this year on the 4th night of Hanukkah. Tonight after we lit the candles, my husband gave me the DVD of the McGarrigle Hour. I grew up listening to you and Kate, and I was so thrilled to receive it. We put it on the TV and I spent the evening watching your family and being reminded of all the times I used to watch an old concert of yours we had taped off the TV when I was younger.
Thank you for all the wonderful gifts you have given all of us.
    Happy Birthday.

    Indeed. You’re welcome.
how kind of you indeed for the rest of us that you were born.
To a year of love and foolish times with friends.

You answered my silly question saying yes you’d retired. Since then I’ve listened to Oddities and checked out the prodigious comings and goings of the greater McGarrigle family. I’m reminded of a story written by Pablo Casals still performing in his 90s, that brings home the fact that artists don’t — don’t need or want to and can’t — retire. Lucky for the rest of us.
Happy belated birthday and a good hard-working 2011.
