John Knowles, a great character and old friend – Sail on.

Thursday, December 19th, 2013

Sadly, our old friend John Knowles left us this past Sunday. John and his first wife Sandra were friends of Edward Ruznak’s, a luthier and long-time employee of Edgar and Charlotte Jones’ Record Centre on MacKay St. Edward introduced John and Sandra to Peter Weldon, the rest of us followed, and their fate was sealed. The Knowles house at 440 Grosvenor Ave. in Westmount was to be the scene of some pretty wild evenings through the 60s and early 70s, but also of more sedate musical get-togethers, to learn the parts to Bach’s Mass in B minor around the old upright. One could say it was where the rowdy met the sacred, though John never actually partook in the ‘effete’ stuff. He was more into Peg Leg Howell and Jimmy Rodgers.

A talented musician and singer with an arresting stage presence, Johnny was also a fine raconteur and just 3 weeks ago he entertained a table of dinner guests with crazy stories about his days working as a barker on the travelling carnival circuit when he was a teen…’they dart, they drive, they dip and they dive, they’re Canada’s only racing monkeys.’ As The Band sang ‘Life is a carnival.’

In the early 80s John married Audrey Bean (co-writer with Anna of Cool River and Louis the Cat) who also happens to be Sylvan’s godmother. John and Audrey, both keen sailors, spent Summers in Riverport N.S. where they own land and where John’s son Peter, a house-builder, and his family live. If you’re ever in Rose Bay, you can see examples of Peter’s work in the graceful maritime vernacular he created.

In Aug 2008, Lily and I visited John and Audrey in Riverport. Here’s a bit of video Lily shot while we were out on the boat in the mouth of La Have River where it meets the Atlantic. Sail on John.

Visit to Kate’s monument at St-Sauveur Parish Cemetery.

Tuesday, August 13th, 2013

This past week was all about Kate, and what a week it was. The family got to see the new monument for the first time on Sun Aug 4. The simple white stone designed by Rufus and Martha and executed by the Brunet family of Ormstown is a fitting tribute to the lovely talented Kate. Her drawing of ‘Skigirl’ graces the front of the stone and on the back is a banjo incorporating lyrics from Kate’s Talk to Me of Mendocino drawn by Rufus.

On Aug. 7 the Place Kate-McGarrigle, a new parkette, on Laurier near Querbes in Outremont, was officially opened and amidst all the speeches and tributes was a special one by Kate’s old friend and piper Ken Mackenzie. Upon hearing the stirring pipes, the President of the Outremont Historical Society turned to me and said ‘I thought you were of Irish and French descent?’ Well, we are mostly, but our paternal grandmother was Joanna Gillis of Fairville, N.B. and for sure we’ve also got good old Native Canadian blood on my mother’s side, like most French-Canadians.

On the evening of Aug 8 the family along with special guests, Robert Charlebois, Marie-Michele Desrosiers, Michel Rivard, Fanny Bloom and Pierre Lapointe did two pretty amazing back-to-back concerts at the Outremont Theatre on Bernard Ouest, in aid of the Kate McGarrigle Fund for Cancer Research. This was followed by an all-night party at Campbell Hendery’s place in the Mile-End..I’m still recovering. Merci, mercy…thank you.

A video I shot at the cemetery intercut with Ken at Place Kate.

Snapshot from around 1967.

Wednesday, July 17th, 2013

Ron Doleman, Kate McGarrigle, Christopher Weldon circa 1967

Just found this pic in an email to Kate in 2006 sent on a server I seldom use. I took it around 1967 outside where I lived. Sorry for the poor quality. It was a slide that was scanned.

Helene de Montigny, my room mate and fellow Beaux-Arts student, McGill students: Ron Doleman, Kate McGarrigle, and her boyfriend Chris Weldon on m’cycle, Daniel Couvreur, also at the Beaux-Arts, outside 1817 rue St Luc Montréal now deMaisonneuve W. where Helene and I lived. Chris always called her Catherine and his nickname was Colossus. Before Matapedia became known as such it was the Ballad of Catherine and Colossus.

BAM – Kate’s Kids tonight Wed Jun 26 2013 – 7.30pm Opera House

Wednesday, June 26th, 2013

Kate McGarrigle photo Janie McG.

Sorry about the delay getting this info up here. This should be a lovely show if the rehearsals are anything to go by. Special guests Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones and Mark Ronson join Martha and Rufus in a variety of songs, some by Kate, many from their own repertoires. Lily is also here singing with Rufus and Martha and me! Aunt Jane and I will attempt something of Kate’s, a first for us.

All proceeds go to the Kate McGarrigle Fund for Sarcoma Research.

Would love to see you all.
